It is with great honor and pleasure to announce the Viewer’s Choice Awards for The 2020 International Quilt Show featuring the BEE Quilt Challenge.
FIRST PLACE WINNER: FLOWERS FIELD AVIGAIL BEN-AVI OF ISRAEL AVIGAIL WINS $100.
The quilting perfectly captures the bees flying from one flower to another.
Inspirational Takeaway - This diagonal setting allows your eyes to move across the entire quilt. The flowers extend beyond the frame which tricks your mind to believe that this is just one small garden delight belonging to a larger bed. Scale plays an important role for the bees and background color placement, without which would look flat. The surprise of turquoise with the red reminds me of the beautiful rugs and blankets woven by the various American Indian tribes here in the Southwest.
SECOND PLACE WINNER: 2020 - WHEN WILL IT BE OVER? AUDREY GRAHAM, MOAB, UTAH AUDREY WINS $75.
Excellent way of showing pollution through careful selection of fabric motif and color.
Inspirational Takeaway - Many new quilters are surprised to learn that it is perfectly acceptable to write on quilts. Our personal marks are extremely important and works quite well here to portray the inner thoughts of the quilter and the current world view.
THIRD PLACE WINNER: HOLLYHOCKS Marian Eason, Moab, Utah Marian wins $50.
French Knots were a very clever way of nestling the bee to give it the effect of gathering pollen. Embroidering the bee with satin stitch padding under the gold stripes ensures that the bee stays pronounced in the composition.
Inspirational Takeaway - It is important to remember when participating in a challenge to not lose yourself in the process. Even though all the quilts were to highlight the importance of bees, this quilter is locally known as an expert on all things winged. Hence, the Hummingbird.
FOURTH PLACE: SWEET MEMORY MAYA CHAIMOVICH TEL AVIV, ISRAEL
FIFTH PLACE: BEE HAPPY CHRIS LEE GRAND JUNCTION, COLORADO
SIXTH PLACE: BEES BETWEEN FLOWERS NERA ESHEL ISRAEL
And, last but not least - HONORABLE MENTION: SWEET HONEY JACQUIE FOOTE (a first time quilter!) ASHBURN, VIRGINIA
Great News - The Utah State Guild has graciously allowed this Bee Quilt Show to be presented during its Spring Fest 2021 Remote Show in May and also in its 2021 Quilt Fest Show in September! This year's participants will receive more information about this exciting development. I can't thank you enough for your participation in making this show a success!
